Course objectives

To provide theoretical and practical understandings of poly-culture and integrated aquaculture. These techniques will help reduce poverty and increase living standard of the people in rural and urban areas

Course schedule

Duration: Two -weeks, beginning May/December

Number of participants: 10-20


- Classroom lectures: 4 days

- Feed preparation: 1 day

- Environmental testing and evaluation: 0.5 day

- Disease diagnostics & treatment: 1 day

- Field-trip: 3 days

Expected outcome

- Successfully apply  techniques for polyculture and integrated aquaculture systems

- Be able to analyze and plan the aquaculture systems to generate safe products

Course Evaluation

Based on final project presentation

Course fee

- 2,000 -3,000 USD/participant/course  (for lecturers, administration, domestic travel, chemical, material for practice, accommodation, meals....)

- Not including international flight

(The fee can be changed depend on requirements)

Section 1: Lectures

Module 1. Introduction

- Current world aquaculture and future

- Introduction aquaculture in Vietnam

- Roles of aquaculture in the rural and sustainable development 

Module 2. Review the biological aspects of species sustainable for poly-culture and integrated aquaculture

(covering freshwater and brackish water)

Module 3. Limnology and ecology of fish ponds

- Limnology

- Ecology

- Interaction and application in fish ponds

Module 4. Water quality and disease prevention

- Water quality management

- Fish disease prevention and treatment

- Waste and other material treatment before fertilizing the fish pond

- fertilization: principles and implementation

- pre-processed material used as feed in the pond

- waste management during culture period

Module 5. Nutrition aspects

- Ingredients classification and quality (local materials)

- Low cost feed formulation

- Simple processing methods

- Feed and feeding frequency

Module 6. Seed selection

- Principles of combination of different species for poly-culture farming

- Principles of species selection for integrated aquaculture farming  

- Seed quality and testing methodology

Module 7. Poly-culture techniques

- Site selection and preparation

- Seed stocking

- Feed and feeding management (including fertilizer and others)

- Water quality management 

- Disease prevention and treatment

- Introduction of methods to produce safe products in polyculture systems

Section 2: Field trip and study tour

- Small-scale fish farms and reservoir cage-culture sites in the mountainous province of Thai Nguyen.

- VAC (garden—pond—husbandry) site in Hai Duong.

- Integrated shrimp-clam farms in Hai Phong.

- Small-scale aquaculture cooperative model at Tu Ky, Hai Duong 

- Sight-seeing/shopping visit to Hanoi capital, Do Son beach, Nui Coc reservoir, etc.
