Course objectives

To provide initial knowledge and hands-on techniques of Pangasius seed production and grow-out as well as related techniques to operation of a catfish farm.

Course schedule

Duration: Three-weeks, April—May

Structure:

- Class-room lectures: 4 days (combining practices

- Hands-on techniques of seed production (e.g. brood-

stock selection, injection - breeding - hatching - nursing): 10 days

- Hands-on pond preparation and operation techniques: 2 days

- Field-trips: 4 days

- Final evaluation test: 1 day

Expected outcome

- Understand fundamental knowledge behind practical techniques used

- Gain necessary hands-on experience for operation of freshwater finfish hatchery and grow-out

Section 1: Lectures

Module 1. General introduction

- Pangasius production and marketing worldwide

- Distribution of species and family

- Production systems and marketing of “Tra” in Vietnam

- Introduction of government program for sustainable development and food security in aquaculture

Module 2. Introduction of biological characteristics and its application in seed production and grow-out

- Environmental parameters requirement

- Feed and feeding 

- Growth and reproduction characteristics

- Spawning and development period

Module 3. Seed production

- Hatchery design and requirements

 + Site selection

 + Hatchery design and layout

 + Hatchery construction 

- Estimation and optimization of the hatchery operation

+ Production capacity and feasible consumption

+ Broodstock population requirement and fingerlings production

+ Optimization production cost for the hatchery

- Broodstock management and selection

- Introduction of hormones and preparation

- Hormone injection and respond timing

- Eggs collection, fertilization and incubation

- Time for fry collection and nursing 

Module 4. Nursery

- Principles of combination of different species for poly-culture farming

- Principles of species selection for integrated aquaculture farming  

- Seed quality and testing methodology

Module 5. Grow-out

- Production planing

- Production facilitys: advantages, disadvantages and its applicable

- Culture preparation (including cage design and set up)

- Seed selection and stocking

- Feed and feeding (including formulation and production of homemade feed) 

- Environmental management and disease prevention

- Treatment of environment and disease

- Harvesting and processing

Section 2: Hand-on practices

Module 1. Harvest and marketing

- Selection of broodstock for spawning

- Hormone stimulation and spawning

- Egg harvesting, evaluation of egg quality, disinfection and incubation

- Live feed production and enrichment for nursing larvae pond

- Larval rearing: live feed feeding phase and weaning onto micro diet

- Evaluation survival rate at different stages.

Module 2. Grow-out operation

- Feed preparation and feeding practice

- Growth rate measurement

- Fish health and environmental monitoring

Section 3: Filed trip and study tour

- Trainees will be offered one-day study visit to Thoi Son islet eco-tourist site in Tien Giang province where intensive Pangasius - Farming (cage and pond) is practiced

- Practicum in the National Centre for Freshwater Species Seed Production and Broodstocks of South Vietnam.
